The Department for Infrastructure has unveiled the draft Transport Strategy 2035, marking a pivotal moment in Northern Ireland's journey toward a more sustainable and inclusive transport system. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins emphasizes that this strategy is not just about infrastructure but about the people who rely on it daily. A Vision for 2035

The draft strategy outlines a comprehensive vision aiming to:

  • Develop a resilient and sustainable transport network.

  • Support connected and inclusive communities.

  • Ensure transport is safe and healthy for all users.

  • Promote green growth to meet climate change requirements.

Minister Kimmins notes the pressing need for change, highlighting that while many short journeys are made by car, a significant portion of the population lacks access to one. This reliance on private vehicles underscores the importance of developing alternative, sustainable modes of travel.

Public Consultation: Have Your Say

The Department is inviting the public to contribute their insights and perspectives to shape the final strategy. The consultation period is open until 16 September 2025. This is an opportunity for individuals and communities to influence the direction of transport policy and infrastructure development for the coming decade.

Our Perspective

At Newry and Mourne Community Transport, we understand that transport is not a luxury — it's a lifeline. For many people in our community, especially those in rural or isolated areas, accessible and affordable transport is essential to maintaining independence, accessing healthcare, employment, education, and staying socially connected.

We welcome the Department’s inclusive approach to shaping the future of transport and strongly encourage our members and service users to take part in this important consultation. Together, we can ensure that transport policy reflects the lived reality of those who need it most.
